Avalanches claim hundreds of lives each winter and it is vitally important skiers and boarders alike are clued up on such an important subject.

To get the most out of your ski holiday you will naturally want to push your skiing boundaries so doing this, staying safe and avalanche safety is of upmost importance. It is important to know that Avalanches can occur on any slopes given the right conditions so there are a few factors you should consider before heading out.

Avalanche Safety – Factors to consider

  • Weather & temperature
  • Snowfall
  • Wind direction
  • Snowpack conditions

Avalanche Safety Tips

  • If there is no other way of crossing a dangerous slope make sure you do it one person at a time to minimize risk
  • When descending stay as far to the sides of any chutes or dangerous looking areas
  • Look after each other, if someone is hungry or tired they won’t be at their best and are more likely to make mistakes
