The architecture in Avoriaz is so unique and stunning that it almost provides a reason to travel to the resort on its own, it has been claimed.

According to, the purpose-built resort bucks the trend when it comes to the design and layout of the buildings, with some amazing structures providing perfect picture opportunities and an original accommodation experience.

"Some purpose-built ski resorts tend to be soulless concrete jungles: functional but without any architectural style or merit. Avoriaz is different: instantly recognisable for its dynamic, angular, quirky and stylish architecture, with few traditionally shaped buildings and roofs," the site stated.

One of the best aspects of the resort and its buildings is that they are in keeping with the natural surroundings, with the high-rise structures mainly fabricated from wood and slate to blend well into the colours of the cliffs.

Meanwhile, the peaks of the rooflines and their silhouettes are intending to echo surrounding mountainscapes to maintain an alpine panorama.

The architectural accomplishment of the resort was recognised in 2003, when the resort was awarded a prize by France's minister of culture for being one of the great heritage achievements of the 20th century.
