There are lots of reasons why the Franco-Swiss area known as Portes du Soleil, or Gateway to the Sun, is perfect for family ski weekends, an expert has said.

First of all, Matt Barr, writing for the Independent, noted the fact that Portes du Soleil is the closest major ski area to Geneva airport, giving it a "definite edge" over other more remote destinations.

"Then there's the fact the area is home to a series of distinctly different villages. Les Gets and Morzine on the French side of the area are picturesque valley towns with wooden chalets and fairy lights hanging from ornate lamp posts," he added.

Morzine is the region's largest town and offers a range of bars and nightclubs for those on more grown-up ski weekends, while the slopes of Avoriaz are ideal for all ages as they cater for skiers of any ability.

On the other side of the hills, Les Gets is "great for beginners" added Mr Barr, though visitors need to familiarise themselves with its many T-bars before taking advantage of the gentle slopes.

Earlier this month professional snowboarder Jenny Jones wrote in the Daily Mail that Avoriaz is an ideal resort for families to earn their snow stripes when embarking on ski weekends for the first time.

Bargain Ski Holidays to Avoriaz.
