There is no doubt that Les Portes du Soleil ranks among the very greatest ski destinations in the world, with its wealth of attractions and vast size, enticing people back for ski holidays year after year.

Comprising thirteen resorts between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland, the resort has almost 700 km km of marked pistes and is spread over 14 valleys, with a total area of 1,000 sq km.

As result, it is second only to the Three Valleys, the world's biggest ski area, in its vastness, and offers something for all winter sports enthusiasts to enjoy.

A major attraction of the area is that nearly all of the pistes are connected by lifts or a free bus service that runs throughout the area, while the snow-making facilities in the area ensure great slopes throughout the ski season.

Arguably the two most famous and therefore, popular resorts, in Pores du Soleil are the traditional town of Morzine and the purpose-built Avoriaz, which each have one major thing in common – guaranteed fun.

Morzine is globally acclaimed for its panoramic mountain views and great amenities, which are far more contemporary than in some other resorts.

The area's accommodation rank alongside the finest on the continent, with Michelin-starred eateries jostling with traditional restaurants.

However, the skiing is where Morzine stands out, and relative novices or absolute beginners can guarantee that the many slopes and long runs can cater for all abilities and, as such, it represents an ideal destination for new and improving skiers

Avoriaz, meanwhile, has a huge ski area to explore and entertain that offers panoramic views and great skiing.
It is perhaps the ideal starting point for people wanting to explore the Portes du Soleil area, with the very real option of skiing to a different resort each day of the week.

Like its sister resort Morzine, Avoraiz caters for skiers of all tastes and abilities, with its slopes of varying terrain and difficulty satisfying even the most demanding winter sports enthusiast, while a snowpark caters for a mixture of freeride and freestyle abilities.

People can also take advantage of a trio of natural, non-groomed slopes of varying steepness that wind in and out of the trees in the Lindarets forest and offer something truly unique to holidaymakers.

Another key feature of Avoriaz is that it is a completely car-free resort, with every chalet and residence accessible on skis, meaning people are not restricted when it comes to joining others or heading to a particular spot on the map for the next phase of their itinerary.

Furthermore, parents can spend their ski weekends in the knowledge that their children are not at risk of traffic and can enjoy the ice skating rink, sledge slope, and children's village in the centre of the resort.

The appeal of the Portes du Soleil region was recently highlighted by the World Snowboard Guide, which noted that one thing that the area definitely offers is variety.

"If you like choice, the sheer number of kilometers of piste will be appealing. Venture to different areas each day to try new runs. Try the 'circuit', which takes you on a tour of most of the resorts before the lifts close. Lots of the runs are great are, and if you want to keep it fresh you won't run out any time soon," the site noted.

"There's obviously a lot of choice when it comes to accommodation too. Busy resorts, quiet resorts. Chalets, hotels or apartments. Stay in the village, stay on the hill. Stay where it's mostly English people walking down the streets, or try something more authentic. The Portes du Soleil definitely offers choice," it added.

Even the pickiest of winter sports enthusiasts will find something to satisfy their tastes in the Portes du Soleil, which truly offers something for everyone.
