Those heading to the slopes on a coach this season will be taking a far more cost-effective mode of transport, according to one study.

Research carried out by the American Bus Association (ABA) shows that not only are ski holidays in France by coach more cost-effective from a fuel point of view, this way of travelling is also far less harsh on the environment.

On average, coach travel gives a passenger over 180 miles to the gallon, whereas going by car, with a boot full of ski equipment and other essentials, barely registers 40 miles to the gallon.

The ABA also revealed that those heading on cheap ski breaks by coach will also only be emitting a fifth of the energy used by the average car.

Al Morgan, information manager at the Ski Club of Great Britain, recently pointed out that far more people are now going on packaged short ski holidays which include coach travel and accommodation in order to benefit from the best deals.
