An increasing number of Brits are opting to travel by coach in order to save money, it has been claimed.

Reluctant to give up their hard-earned holidays, people are exploring cheaper alternatives such as coach travel, figures from the Coach Tourism Council (CTC) have revealed.

Coach holiday bookings for the first period of 2009 are up 20 per cent on the previous year.

"Despite thousands being hit hard by the credit crunch, high unemployment and awful returns on savings, its easy to forget that there are still millions of people who still intend to take a holiday this year," said CTC chairman Sean Taggart.

As well as being more economical, travelling by coach is greener and safer than many other forms of transport, he added.

Figures released by the organisation last year show that eight million Brits take holidays by coach annually.

Meanwhile, travelling by coach could be the ideal way to take a ski holiday in France and make the most of the exceptional conditions there.
