Winter sports enthusiasts are increasingly recognising the benefit of wearing helmets on their ski holidays, it has been claimed.

According to a new report by RX Sport, a provider of safety essentials such as helmets and goggles, head gear in particular is being adopted by many winter sports fans who are conscious about protecting themselves on the slopes.

James Coakley, director of the company, said: "It's estimated that wearing a ski helmet can cut the risk of injury by as much as 60 per cent so it's understandable that more and more are thinking 'safety first' and purchasing what could be a life-saving accessory."

He added that the design of ski helmets is also continuing to improve, so people feel less style-conscious when wearing them.

Recent ski safety advice was issued by Asia Yasir, spokeswoman for esure travel, who noted that more and more resorts are now offering high-adrenaline sports, such as ice-lake diving, off-piste snowboarding and bobsleighing, so travel insurance is a wise option.
