Taking trips abroad on ski weekends and other short holidays is becoming increasingly popular, according to a new report.

A study carried out by Santander shows that British adults have spent a total of £21.5 billion on weekend breaks in the past year, including skiing holidays.

According to the statistics, 61 per cent of UK adults have been on at least one weekend away in the past 12 months, with France the most popular overseas destination for breaks.

Half of those who have travelled abroad in that period went with a spouse or partner, the data also showed.

Ian Coles, director at Santander Cards, commented: "With more flight routes and last-minute holiday deals making weekend breaks easier, the weekend getaway industry is huge both at home and abroad."

It comes as Amanda Edwards, a spokeswoman for AXA Travel Insurance, advised anyone heading on ski weekends in the coming months to make sure they have appropriate travel insurance in place to cover them.
