Winter sports enthusiasts from the UK will not be disappointed by their skiing holiday in Meribel, according to one source which said the resort is perfectly suited to British travellers.

Matt Barr, writing for the Independent, said that Meribel is like "an extension of the Home Counties", as 37 per cent of annual visitors to the region are British, compared with 48 per cent of French tourists.

"True, we used to jokingly to call the place 'Francefordshire', but the Meribel we knew was a place where a vibrant and permanent Anglo-French community existed happily. Crucially, we were drawn back year upon year by the endless amounts of terrain on offer," he explained.

Mr Barr added that the reading about the 600km of slopes and 183 lifts does not do Meribel justice, as it is a sight which has to be seen to be believed and a ski holiday well worth travelling on.

People in Meribel can also attend the upcoming Altitude comedy festival, which will feature some of the continent's top acts on stage, including Al Murray in his pub landlord guise.
