People heading on skiing holidays in Morzine and other top European resorts in the coming weeks have been urged to wear helmets to enhance their safety on the slopes.

The recommendations come following a study conducted at St Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada, and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Specialists at the facility found that people on skiing holidays in Morzine who wear helmets can reduce their risk of suffering a head injury by up to 60 per cent.

Dr Michael Cusimano, a neurosurgeon at St. Michael's Hospital who led the research, commented: "We have established the safety benefits but now we must find ways to integrate helmets so it becomes another piece of standard equipment for people on the slopes."

The study follows recent research carried out at the University of Calgary and published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, which showed that wearing helmets when on skiing holidays in Morzine increases safety.
