A restaurant in Zermatt has won a top industry award for being environmentally friendly.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the new solar restaurant which stands at an altitude of 2,883 metres, has been awarded the 2010 Solar Prize for new buildings in Zurich after fulfilling the requirements of the Minergie-P standard.

The judging panel described it as "a role model for the entire Alpine region" and Hans-Peter Julen, chairman of the board of directors for Zermatt Bergbahnen, said it is a great honour.

The restaurant, which has a stunning viewing platform, was opened by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG in the winter of 2008-09 and produces all the electricity needed for heating and ventilation using the photovoltaic system built into the facade.

"Receiving the 2010 Solar Prize for the solar restaurant is a first step in the right direction on the route we intend to pursue," Mr Julen explained.

Future improvements to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise will include looking into how to improve the design of the viewpoint to accommodate larger visitor numbers.
