People can save a lot of money by going on fly-drive cheap ski breaks, but they should make sure they pack the essentials for the journey, one website has advised.

The World Travel Guide said the option can give a lot more flexibility, but families need to get prepared and consider what extra items they will need for the driving element.

It advised getting something to entertain the children in the car, such as a DVD player or games, as often longer journeys can lead to bored kids.

Another thing to consider is hiring a roof rack or box which sits on top of the car, especially if people are taking their own ski equipment.

Insurance is another important factor to consider, as driving for long journeys in ice and snowy conditions makes it a must.

Another top tip for those going on cheap ski breaks is to "check the legal requirements for the countries you will be driving through - they're all a little bit different", including speed limits, needing a reflective jacket and drink-drive limits.

Travel insurance is another essential for those going on cheap ski breaks, with Christian Young, director of AA Travel Insurance, recently saying that many people forget it before heading abroad.

Fantastic Short Ski Holidays in France.
