More people are planning on taking a break abroad this year, such as skiing holidays, compared to the number that went away last year, with one expert seeing positive signs already.

Lucy Huxley, editor of Travel Weekly, said there has already been an uplift in the industry as people seem more set on taking a break this year.

Her comments follow research from First Rate Exchange Services, which found that 58 per cent of adults plan on taking breaks like skiing holidays this year, while 22 per cent are still considering their options.

Ms Huxley said that last year was tough for holidays, adding: "Customers who may have skipped their annual holiday last year to save money appear to be keen to make sure their main break is ring-fenced in 2010."

She added that the popular destinations are emerging already as travel companies urge people to book early for their annual break.
