Of the many stunning ski resorts across the Europe, only one has been labelled the Pearl of the Alps - Saas Fee – and there are several good reasons why the destination has earned this moniker.

Situated on a high plateau above the striking Saas Valley, Sass Fee overlooks the other three communities in the region - Saas-Grund, Saas Almagell and Saas Balen – and has established itself as a firm and regular fixture in the itineraries of winter sports fans across the planet.

The Saas Valley has around 100 kilometres of excellent pistes of activities and attractions to suit all ages and abilities, while the altitude of the resort – 1,800m – means snowfall is guaranteed.

As the travel site My Switzerland notes, the 22 lifts and fantastic prepared pistes in Saas Fee means it forms the heart of the entire ski region.

"In addition to Saas-Fee, there is a further ski area in the nearby region of Kreuzboden-Hochsaas above Saas-Grund. 20 kilometres of winter walking trails and an eight-km-long cross-country ski trail are provided for non-Alpine skiers. Various toboggan runs, such as the 11-km-long toboggan run from Kreuzboden to Saas-Grund offer alternatives to skiing," it explained.

In a resort with so many highlights, it is hard to pick one, but those who travel on the famous Metro Alpin will find that it takes them to the world's highest revolving restaurant, and one of the most stunning eateries ever built.

The restaurant offers a far-reaching vista across the mountainscape from the glacier of the Mittelallalin and is the perfect opportunity to take a photo that will provide permanent memories of the occasion.

Other highlights include the Allalin ice pavilion, where the secrets of the glacier are vented for visitors within the permanent ice, while the Alpin gorge provides a fixed-rope route crossing of the amazing brook gorge, with rope bridges and tyrolienne cables creating thrilling traverses.

In addition, the resort's adventure park offers a suspension rope park with courses of varying degrees of difficulty waiting to be tackled against a stunning glacier backdrop, which is sure to linger long in the memory.

Furthermore, the Feeblitz toboggan run, which has a 55-degree incline, offers great fun for all ages and is particularly impressive at night when the course is illuminated.

However, the true reason why Saas Fee is known as the Pearl of the Alps is its amazing ski slopes, which rival almost anywhere else in the continent.

The ski domain has 32 ski pistes totalling 100km, with 50km red and the other 50km split evenly between blue and black, as well three off-piste ski routes.

As the winter sports advice site Ultimate Ski notes, the high altitude skiing in Saas Fee benefits from great weather conditions, with 100-140 hours of sunshine per month, and is a particular haven for intermediates.

"There's no mistaking the slopes of Saas Fee. From the highest, there are good views of many of the thirteen 4,000m peaks that surround the Saas valley including the 4,545m Dom, Switzerland's highest mountain," it explained.

"If it frequently feels as if you're skiing on or next to a huge glacier, that's because you are."

Better still, skiers and snowboarders can utilise the freestyle snow park above Morenia, with one half-pipe, a boarder cross and two kickers, and 30km of hiking trails for winter walkers, offering plenty to entice people of all ages and abilities.

With an amazing combination of unique attractions, great on-piste skiing and reliable weather, Saas Fee looks set to keep hold of its crown as the Pearl of the Alps for many years to come.
