Heading away for a winter sports break certainly makes for an exciting holiday, but if it's going to be the first time you are taking this kind of getaway it is really important to choose your resort with care. Indeed, if you have a relatively limited amount of experience at skiing or snowboarding it's vital to select somewhere that offers good facilities for beginners.

With that in mind, Morzine has been cited by one writer as a great place for those embarking on their first-ever skiing break. In a Ski Club article, Olivia Stuart-Taylor indicates that "beginners would feel comfortable" at the French resort, with the quality of its tuition facilities and nursery slopes given particular praise.

Indeed, Ms Stuart-Taylor claims Morzine is "capable of converting children and adult beginners into ski fanatics".

However, while she indicates the complex features a good variety of terrain - including wide open pistes and facilities for tree skiing - those with a greater level of experience are advised to visit some of the other resorts within the Portes du Soleil ski area.

As this complex consists of 12 resorts and 650 km of pistes, all those taking a skiing holiday to Morzine are sure to find the opportunity to access routes suitable for their level of experience.

Of course, there is much more to ski breaks than the quality of sporting facilities that a resort offers and it is also worth seeing what the local apres ski scene is like.

However, this is an area where Ms Stuart-Taylor suggests Morzine delivers, noting that the restaurants are "enchanting".

"Although small, the resort is stocked with a selection of cosy and familiar bars guaranteeing that there is always somewhere new to try for an essential apres drink," she claims, adding the town is also famous for its good-quality cheeses.

Skiers will also find an array of bars situated on the ski slopes, including Le Nabor - which specialises in vegetarian dishes - and L'Atray des Neiges, where you can enjoy a great selection of crepes.
