There are plenty of opportunities for people to venture off the beaten track in Chamonix and try their hand at freeriding, it has been claimed.

According to the advice site On the Snow, Mont Blanc offers some of the very best freeride runs on the planet, straight from the ski lift, with "exceptional" mountain scenery.

It explained that the best place to start is the Grands Montets, where people can ski the Argentiere glacier and the many off-piste routes down to Chamonix, which vary in difficulty.

Another option is the Aiguilles du Midi, where Europe's highest ski lift is located, while the Gross Rognon is an alternative route, as the snow is less visited to the left of it and people can ski in deep virgin snow.

"It is also an excellent opportunity to test your skills in deep snow because you can easily rejoin the 'classique' route whenever you want to," the source added.

For those looking for a true challenge, the site said Envers du Plan is a steeper and more difficult route that takes people between the crevasses on a wilder part of the glacier du Geant, and is one of the best routes for good backcountry skiers, with many possible variants.
