There's still plenty to do in the Alps during the summer for those who still want to take advantage of the breathtaking scenery.

The Haute Route (or the High Route) is one of the great treks of the world. It's a 110-mile route that can be undertaken on foot, running through some of the most scenic parts of the Alps. It begins in Chamonix in the shadow of Mont Blanc and ending under the Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland. Along the way you'll be able to marvel at the fantastic peaks, visit spectacular valleys, discover delightful villages and hamlets and wander through beautiful meadows and forests.

It is a demanding but thrilling mountaineering-style trek that takes about 12 days for walkers and there are variations on the route to make it suitable for summer walking. Snow may remain on the higher passes well into July though.

So if you don't want to wait until the winter to visit the Alps on a short ski holiday, you can always find plenty to do in the summer.
