People heading on ski weekends in the near future will be delighted to hear that the snow is falling thick and fast across the Alps, with plenty of the white stuff ensuring perfect skiing conditions.

There has been over half a metre in places and this looks set to continue in the coming days and weeks as a thick blanket of snow covers some of Europe's most popular resorts, including Chamonix, Courchevel and Val Thorens.

With some resorts already open and many more set to follow suit this weekend, the snowfall has begun at the perfect time for people heading on ski weekends before Christmas or those planning a festive break.

After a fairly mild autumn by the usual standards, the thick blanket of snow has prompted a surge of bookings as people look to get away from it all and make the most of the fantastic conditions.

Crucially, temperatures have also dropped and many resorts are supplementing the natural snowfall with snow cannons to ensure a good base for winter sports enthusiasts.

The advice site Planet Ski noted that the Swiss resorts of Zermatt and Saas Fee are all enjoying great snowfall, while many resorts at lower altitude are being blanketed in snow due to the falling temperature.

Winter sports specialist Lisa Tyrrell said that the news of the great weather is spreading fast and people are getting out their salopettes in preparation

"The recent cold snap in the UK and snowfall across The Alps has prompted people to think about their ski holidays and there has been a surge of bookings in the last few days.

"With more snow forecast the spike in bookings is set to continue for the foreseeable future," she explained.

Those in search of Christmas or New Year ski weekends are now weighing up their options and deciding which of the continent's many thrilling resorts to travel to.
