People can help to boost their safety on ski weekends by wearing helmets whenever they are on the slopes, according to one expert.

Barbara Sibbald, deputy editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, said that the one thing people who buy helmets to wear on winter sports trips need to be aware of is that the item must conform with safety standards.

Helmets provide "optimal protection" for a range of impacts, and even though the risk of suffering an accident is very low while on the slopes, it is still wise to wear the protection for peace of mind, the expert said.

It comes as Dr Christopher Magovern, an ABC News contributor and a cardiac surgeon at Morristown Medical Center, said that there are plenty of ways to stay safe on the slopes and ensure ski holidays go without a hitch in the months ahead, including wearing a helmet.

"In the past, one of the biggest reasons not to wear a helmet was that it was perceived as being uncool. Today that is just the opposite; you look cooler with a helmet," Dr Magovern added.
