Enjoy a late end to the ski season in Saas Fee

05 March 2014
With winter turning to spring in the northern hemisphere, ski resorts across Europe will soon be preparing to wind down as the snow begins to thaw and the slopes start to shut. However, there are a number of high altitude destinations throughout the Alps where the winter fun still has several months left to run, and one such place is Saas Fee in Switzerland.

Aside from its lofty elevation, Saas Fee also benefits from the fact that it is overlooked by an enormous glacier, which not only provides year-round skiing opportunities, but also keeps temperatures low throughout the entire valley, thereby ensuring that the slopes remain covered in snow until well into the spring. This makes the classy Swiss resort a fantastic option for anyone who wants to get their fill of alpine action later in the season, and those who do decide to visit in the final weeks and months of the skiing period will find plenty of fun events going on to help them make the most of the lingering snow.

Here's a look at some of the things that visitors to Saas Fee can look forward to over the final month or so of this year's ski season.

The Allalin Races

On the 4th and 5th of April, Saas Fee will play host to the annual Allalin Races, which are the highest downhill glacier races in the world. Returning for the 32nd year, the event will see skiers and snowboarders from across Europe take part in what is sure to be a thrilling event for both participants and spectators, with several different heats being included in the programme. As well as the serious contests, the Allalin Races also features a number of fun races which are always a great laugh for everyone present.

As if that weren't enough, there will also be live music on the slopes to keep people entertained between races, so there certainly won't be any danger of getting bored. The Allalin Races are perhaps the perfect example of just why Saas Fee is such an excellent choice for late season skiing, with the glacier being used to fantastic effect to keep the fun and games going at a time when other resorts in the Alps are beginning to close.

Season End Apres Ski Parade

While the ski season in Saas Fee is a long one, the sad truth is that all good things do eventually have to come to an end. However, if the slopes must close for the summer then they might as well do so with a bang, and you can rest assured that this is certainly the case here. The annual Season End Apres Ski Parade has developed into one of the most exciting events on Saas Fee's social calendar over recent years, and sees several bars, restaurants and chalets join together to form a 'party mile'.

This year's parade will be taking place on April 26th and will once again see DJs performing in the street, while special cocktail menus will be offered at participating bars and restaurants. Don't forgot to hit the slopes too, however, as this may well be your last chance to do so for several months!ADNFCR-1958-ID-801700458-ADNFCR
