Saas Fee is Switzerland's number one ski resort, according to a poll of winter sports fans. Internationally it was voted second out of 55 top ski destinations in Austria, Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland.

One of the most important barometers of how well ski resorts are performing, the Best Ski Resort survey involved over 40,000 guests. In terms of snow reliability, slope preparation and cosiness, Saas-Fee hit top status, leading to the gold medal in Switzerland.

Internationally, the winter sports guests voted Saas-Fee into second place out of 55 ski resorts in the European Alps.

Rainer Flaig, chief executive officer of Saas-Fee cableways, explains the resort's reliability for snow coverage plays a big part in its continued popularity. "About 70 per cent of all ski slopes in Saas-Fee are guaranteed for snow," he says.

With a glacier and skiing up to 3,600 metres, Saas Fee is undoubtedly one of the most snow sure resorts anywhere in the Alps. The resort has also invested strongly into artificial snow production over the last few years.

Saas-Fee also ranked in first place across Europe for grooming. "The Saas-Fee cableways has strongly invested in the infrastructure for preparing the slopes. This top rank was achieved with the help of our highly qualified and experienced teams who secure the quality of the slopes," comments Mr Flaig.

"That even in summer the slopes are living up to the highest expectations are demonstrated through the numerous national and youngster teams, which train in Saas-Fee for competitions regularly since many years."

While boasting an impressive 100km of runs set amidst some of the spectacular Alpine scenery, it's more than just the slopes that make short ski breaks to Saas Fee so appealing. The resort was first for cosiness and second for ambience. Indeed car-free Saas Fee is "arguably the most beautiful village in the Alps", according to the Ski Club of Great Britain.

Tourism director Pascal Schaer says: "The top ranks achieved in these two categories clearly shows that authentic and decelerated vacation resorts are en vogue.

"Further are the historic and landmarked Stadel made out of sun blackened larch wood, the narrow alleys and stone covered roofs are unique for the guests experience. Here it shows that product quality and authenticity are looked for by guests."

And resort bosses insist that the destination will be even more attractive this winter as they are lowering lift pass prices by ten per cent for the 2012/13 season.

Saas Fee is also improving its offering for non-skiers with a reduced rate pass for walkers. New for this winter is a special winter hiking pass for non-skiers who fancy exploring the mountains on foot or joining the rest of their party for lunch on the slopes. The pass is valid for six consecutive days and entitles holders to use all cableways in the Saas Valley.
