The 2012/13 ski season is underway in the US, as one of the country's biggest and best resorts opens.

Arapahoe Basin became the first Colorado resort to open when its Black Mountain Express chair started running yesterday (October 17th).

A few other tiny resorts, such as Wild Mountain in Minnesota had already opened, but Arapahoe Basin is the first international destination to kick off the season.

While the Alps are always a little later to get going, there are some resorts in Europe to head to for a ski weekend in late October and through November.

Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil has received a fair old dump of snow in the last few days, but like most French resorts remains shut.

If you do want to bag a cheap ski weekend to try out some new equipment ahead of the season proper, you'll need to look higher.

Tignes – Great skiing is being reported at the moment up on the Grande Motte glacier. There is a base of about 35cm with some nice fresh powder on top thanks to snow falling over the weekend. Six lifts are open.

Hintertux – Near Mayerhofen, the glacier at Hintertux is one of the best in the world, with some of the steepest runs around. The snow is improving and there is a base of about 65cm. Hintertux has 12 lifts running today.

Stubai Glacier – Some more cracking skiing on offer here as Austria seems to be enjoying the best of the autumn conditions. A load of fresh snow has added to a decent base, while six lifts are running.

Zermatt – A whopping 80cm of snow still up top coupled with some fresh powder makes this one of the best places to ski right now. Saas Fee has well over a metre of snow, but has been shut temporarily due to weather conditions.
