Ski holidays to the Spanish Pyrenees

What do we love about skiing in the Spanish Pyrenees?

If you like a more relaxed, fun atmosphere to your ski trips; with high value skiing on well designed slopes, often equipped with the latest fast lifts, the Spanish Pyrenees are for you.

With the ski area located just a few hours north of Barcelona, this is the place for long daylight hours on sunny slopes with a relaxing lunch on the terrace.

But that’s not to say there’s not serious skiing to be had. The Spanish love their steep slopes as well as their fast cruisers. And you’ll find plenty of off-piste itineraries and even great heli-skiing if you’re needing a challenge.

Spanish skiing is famous for running on a more relaxed timescale than the Alps.  Of course you’re welcome to get on the first lift of the day if you really want to, and you’ll find nice quiet slopes to enjoy if you do, but for most the ski day starts nearer 10am. The difference in the après ski and dining scene is even more marked with dinner not usually served before 9pm and the bars not getting busy until around midnight.

Ski Weekends resorts in the Spanish Pyrenees

Ski holidays to Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada offers a very different ski holiday experience to most resorts you’ll have visited before!  Most immediately apparent is that you’re in Andalucía in southern Spain, and although the ski centre is on mainland Spain’s highest peak, far above the beaches and olive groves, you drive through coastal Mediterranean scenery and then the ancient city of Grenada, a UNESCO World Heritage site on your way up there – which feels very different.

Sierra Nevada itself too is very different, quick and easy to reach from Grenada or Malaga airports, along with its extensive ski slopes it has got a compact, pedestrianised centre with a fun, vibrant atmosphere, helped in part by the fact that eating and drinking are so affordable (expect to pay 2 Euros for a drink with a free tapas thrown in – the norm here) and in part because of the youthful crowds that flock up from university city Grenada below.

Despite its southerly location (It’s the most southerly resort in Europe in fact, as well as one of the highest) it has an impressive snowfall reputation, backed up by a massive snowmaking arsenal, and often stays open in to May with the snow base metres thick.
