Sochi 2014

01 January 0001
It's nearly time for the most talked about event in the winter sports calendar

So, the athletes are out there already, the snowboard course has been tweaked due to injury to Norwegian snowboarder Torstein Horgmo (he broke his collarbone during practice)'s nearly time for it all begin.

We couldn't go any further without mentioning Emily Sarsfield who Ski Weekends have sponsored this winter. Unfortunately Emily has not been selected to represent Britain in the the ski cross at Sochi 2014. Despite being asked to take part by FIS (International Ski Federation) the BOA have stuck to their guns and say she did not meet the criteria. Emily has since been campaigning hard to try and get them to change their minds and you can help support her by signing the petition

Winter sport athletes have been preparing for this event for the last 4 years and if the hype and controversy surrounding Sochi is any indication of the excitement we are likely to see, we can't wait.

The build up to the Games in Sochi seems to have been greater than any Games before. The BBC produced a much talked about Lord of the Rings style TV advert which was shown on prime time television including during Ski Sunday and just after one of the episodes of the latest Sherlock series!

And then there was The Jump on Channel 4! Did you watch it? If you missed it this is where various celebrities took part in a range of winter sports including ski cross, bobsleigh, speed skating and of course ski jumping. The two celebrities with the slowest times at these events then had to compete head to head at ski jumping. The person who jumped the shorted distance was then eliminated from the competition. We have to say, they all (pretty much) gave it a very good go and one of the highlights has to have been seeing Eddie the Eagle back on his skis!!

All this coverage has certainly helped us get in the mood for skiing and snowboarding, or maybe even trying one of the other winter sports! In the mean time we can't wait to watch the experts and see how they do at the winter games in Sochi.
