  • Ski area

High up in the Austrian Alps you will come across an area called the Silvretta Arena in the Tyrol ski area. This is home to the charming and traditional village of Galtür which has its own ski area – Silvapark. Galtür is well placed to get to the lively town of Ischgl which is just a 15 minute bus journey, and is also on the Silvretta lift pass.

Silvapark has 40km of pistes with around 18 runs to suit different levels of skiers and snowboarders. To get to the Silvapark ski area, you will need to get a bus from Galtür but this takes less than 5 minutes. Once you are on the mountain, there is a beginner area which has a couple of rope tows as well as a few blues, but there are plenty of reds to play on and a few blacks to tackle if that is more what you are looking for!

Generally speaking, most people only tend to do a couple of days in the Silvapark area and spend the rest of their time in the Silvretta Arena due to the extensive terrain on offer. However, for beginners, the Silvapark area is far quieter, and you know what? The views aren’t half bad either!

    The resort

Galtür is a cosy little village in the Paznuan valley and is considerably quieter than its neighbouring town of Ischgl. For food, there are plenty of restaurants both on the slope and in the village itself, with pizzerias, cafes, snack bars and pubs as well as more traditional restaurants, so you can fully immerse yourself in the culture of the area! If you really want to get involved in the culture, then you have to try some of the Paznaun Alpine Cheese which is somewhat of a Tyrolean delicacy.

Galtür first rose to fame for all the wrong reasons; it unfortunately suffered the worst Alpine avalanche in over 40 years in 1999, claiming the lives of 31 people. A museum dedicated to those that lost their lives is located in the village and is well worth a visit to understand the history of Galtür and how far it has come since then.

These days Galtür is the perfect ski resort to head to for families. The family friendly skiing at Silvapark was designed to accommodate all, and offers a great opportunity for children to get involved with different activities such as night skiing and treasure hunts - so you can count on the kids being kept busy throughout your stay!
