Known as the ‘Diamond of the Alps’ Obergurgl has earned its reputation as one of Austria’s premier ski resorts through its wide, spacious pistes, snow sure conditions and quick and efficient lift systems.
The Top Express gondola links Obergurgl with its sister resort Hochgurgl for easy access to the extended ski area. This means skiers get access to the 110km of downhill skiing, with around 40 individual pistes, served by 24 ski lifts.
Although none of Obergurgl/Hochgurgl’s 110km of piste are on a glacier, the resorts are high enough that good natural snow is virtually guaranteed from November to May. With almost all the runs above the treeline and plenty of runs steep enough to keep intermediates and even advanced skiers and snowboarders happy there is something for all! There’s plenty of choice for beginners in this area too.
For serious skiers wanting to take a guided tour, there’s a huge off-piste paradise to explore. There are over 250 3000m plus peaks in the Ötztal Alps which makes it the largest glaciated area in the eastern Alps - and you can explore at least 50 of them in the Obergurgl area!
Obergurgl is one of Austria’s most famous resorts. Set high at the end of a picturesque valley this luxury resort boasts some of the top hotels in the entire Ötztal region.
In this resort, enjoy some of the fantastic views both up and down the valley. Enjoy a refreshing coffee or beer overlooking the ‘King’s Valley’ and across to the Italian Dolomites from the 360-degree Top Mountain Star Restaurant at over 3000m above sea level. This is what we like to call drinks with a view!
No trip to Obergurgl is complete without a trip to the famous Nederhutte! This restaurant transforms at 4pm each afternoon when the Nederhutte band takes to the stage, rocking out everything from contemporary pop, traditional Austrian ‘Oompa’ music to classic rock such as AC/DC.
Back in town there are a number of après alternatives, from a relaxed and sophisticated ambience at the ‘Wine Lodge’ to the local’s favourite haunt, ‘Josl Keller’, where the party keeps going way into the early hours.
In addition to skiing, Obergurgl offers activities ranging from winter hiking paths and guided ski tours to tobogganing and night time snow shoe trips. These are all perfect ways to admire this charming village whose beauty still remains its most distinctive feature.
