Set high in the mountains of SalzburgerLand is the snow-sure resort of Obertauern, home to 100km of some incredible pistes. Obertauern is a ski-in/ski-out resort from most of the hotels in the area, which means it’s incredibly easy to access the slopes and the 26 lifts in the Tauern Pass.

Obertauern is generally open from the end of November to early May. It holds the snow impeccably well throughout this period, with the support of its snowmaking system which covers 90km of the pistes. But fear not, as on this ski circuit you are able to chase the sun all day!

The ability level most suited to this area would be intermediates, but there really is something for everyone; the area is well linked by the lift system, so those skiers that are comfortable on blues and reds will enjoy getting some miles under their belts. There are several dedicated beginner areas, including a high altitude nursery slope with several easy runs taking you back down to the village, which are great for both snowboarders and skiers!

Finally, there is some stunning off-piste to be found in this resort with a guide for the expert skiers and snowboarders in the group. There are treelines, powder fields and more out on the mountain to discover if you really want to push yourself to the limit!

    The resort

Just 70 minutes from Salzburg, Obertauern is located in the Tauern Pass and nearby to many other ski resorts that also operate under the Salzburg Super Ski Card – such as Kitzbühel and Schladming. Consisting mainly of ski-in/ski-out hotels and lodges, Obertauern is a very convenient resort and is the perfect place for the early bird skiers who love to be ready for those first lifts and fresh tracks on a short ski break!

Obertauern ski resort is made up of a mixture of modern and traditional buildings, the majority lining either side of the main road that runs through the centre of the village. Since everything is on the main high-street, it means you do not have to walk particularly far in order to reach shops, restaurants and local bars. The food in Obertauern is excellent with a mixture of restaurants and ski huts, covering a wide range of food from local specialities to pizzerias and grills.

Those looking for other activities to get involved with need not look any further than the night skiing. Guests have the opportunity to do this on various different nights during the week, and they have around 7km to play on beneath the floodlights.
