Set in the province of Salzburg, the village of Saalbach (officially titled Saalbach – Hinterglemm) is now Austria’s second most popular destination for ski holidays. In winter 2015/16 the Saalbach – Hinterglemm Leogang ski resort and the Fiberbrunn ski resort joined forces via the new Tyrol-S gondola making it one of the largest ski resorts in Austria.

With an excellent range of pistes and state-of-the-art lifts, the Saalbach – Hinterglemm resort meets the highest standards. On powder days you’ll find tremendous off-piste skiing through the trees and plenty of local guides to show you the way. For skiing and snowboarding, there are now 270 km of slopes available and 70 ski lifts so you’ll enjoy comfortable rides up the mountain at efficient speeds with little chance of queueing.

For beginners on their first ever ski holiday, the nursery slopes are by the villages so you're never too far from a rest stop should you need one. Intermediates will enjoy the vast majority of the ski area with numerous access points to skiing along the valley. Due to the resort heavily investing in new ski lifts, it’s extremely easy to get around.

The best time to take a ski break here is usually early on in the season. The valley is split between north and south facing slopes. The south facing slopes will be sunnier with excellent snow conditions in early season however it can get slushy at the start and end of the season. You can still experience great powder here late in the season but the north facing slopes get much more shade which ensures for greater reliability in snow cover.

    The resort

With a rich history of skiing dating back to as early as 1898, Saalbach-Hinterglemm is often regarded as the best après ski resort in the Alps, so there’s no doubt that this is the perfect destination for the ultimate group ski trip.

If you’re after a bit more peace and quiet, then Hinterglemm is the more tranquil of the two villages and is more popular for family skiing holidays. Whatever your destination though, you will have a  superb ski area to enjoy!

The villages have more than 30 pubs/bars and 9 clubs, so as the lifts come to a close the bars and pubs will come to life! With DJs and regular live music, Saalbach has a brilliant reputation for nightlife, so if you’re planning a group ski trip and enjoy going out after a day on the snow, then we recommend staying here.

As well as a brilliant nightlife, Saalbach has some wonderful sun spots where you can sit out on the terraces, relax and enjoy the picturesque mountain views.

For the non-skiers there are plenty of other outdoor and indoor activities to keep you entertained. In Hinterglemm you will find a local sports centre complete with a tennis hall and an ice skating rink. For a more exhilarating experience, try out the toboggan runs in Saalbach and Hinterglemm or why not give paragliding a try? For indoor fun there's a bowling alley and an arcade, and for a bit of history and culture, check out the local ski museums!
