The Espace Killy ski area – named after France’s famed Olympic downhill skiing champion, Jean Claude Killy – is made up of both the Tignes ski area and its more industrious neighbour, Val d’Isere. Together they make up one of Europe’s most attractive and stimulating ski areas. 

With a wide variety of terrain, from cruisy blues to tricky blacks, it is the perfect resort to keep all levels of skier and snowboarder more than occupied for the duration of their stay. Whilst beginners are advised to make the most of the free lifts down towards Tignes-le-lac, intermediates should attempt to ski as much of the area as possible to experience what the Espace Killy really has to offer.

With the Grande Motte Glacier offering high altitude skiing year-round on a mixed difficulty of slopes, you can be confident that there will be enough to peak your interests. Whether you are looking for a more relaxed time skiing, or to challenge yourself on your short ski break, there will be something to suit you! With such a variety on offer, even the most enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders will struggle to cover all the pistes on offer, especially just on a ski weekend away! 

Be sure to take advantage of these miles on offer though! With lots of modern lifts in place, you can rest assured that you will spend as much time as possible carving down the slopes rather than waiting in massive queues or riding the worlds slowest lifts!

Advanced

For advanced and expert skiers, the skiing in the Espace Killy offers some of the best terrains you will find in the Alps. With a great mix of challenging black ‘naturides’ and reds that you can cruise or carve your way down, you are sure to be left with a smile on your face at the end of each day! One of the more challenging blacks to try out is the Trolles from the top of the Tovière gondola down to Tignes-le-Lac, with great sections that are steep and often covered with moguls.  

Intermediates

This is a brilliant area for intermediate skiers. With hundreds of kilometres to cover, there is more than enough skiing in the Espace Killy region, and even just in Tignes itself. With the Espace Killy pass, it is well worth heading over towards Le Fornet where there are more wooded areas and a good mix of runs to tackle on your way there and back. Make sure you try out some of the routes down from the Grande Motte cable car, the views are great and the runs aren’t quite as challenging as the piste markers suggest!  

Beginners 

There are some great nursery slopes down in Tignes-le-Lac that are great for beginners to start on and are served by two lifts, one chairlift and a drag lift. Similar to Val d’Isere you do not need a lift pass to use these lifts. Those beginners who are slightly more sure of themselves can try to head up towards the Bellevarde area where there are plenty more greens to try out. 

Those looking to learn in Val Claret though may actually find it easier to head down to Le Lac for lessons, as the greens tend to be quite steep and often very busy! Access to the Bellevarde area is a lot easier from here though from the top of the Fresse chairlift. 

Snowboarders

With few draglifts and a wide variety of runs, there is plenty for even the most avid snowboarder to take on. There are a few flat spots – particularly around the Bellevarde area – but that should not detract from the excellent facilities they have for snowboarders, such as the snowparks and then a whole heap of off-piste that local instructors and guides are more than happy to show you to. An added bonus is the wide pistes, meaning you are less likely to be held up by any ski school snakes! 

Off-Piste*

The Espace Killy is seen as one of the best areas for off-piste skiing and snowboarding in France. The diverse terrain you get makes each line an absolute belter. You are able to get down and dirty in the trees, or head up a bit higher and cruise down the powder fields. We suggest getting your own local guide to show you the hot spots rather than following other people’s lines, as nothing beats an un-tracked line!
