What we love about skiing in Austria

There’s a particular image of ski holidays we all have – the traditional ski slope winding down through a wooded valley, the cosy mountain restaurant and the traditional ski chalet to stay in. In reality, there’s only one country that really offers all that – Austria.

Besides having picture postcard perfect snowy scenery, the Austrians have long been smart enough to know they’re on to a good thing, and long ago put in place strict building controls that mean that no one can stick up an ugly concrete building, it has to be traditional chalet style.

Austrian insistence on good, hearty food and drink also plays to the visiting skier’s advantage and an obsession with high quality and purity means that almost all Austrian ski areas not only have pure spring water coming out of the taps, but their lifts are all powered by renewable energy too, good for the old conscience!

The ski resorts themselves include some of the most famous names in the skiing world, this is where the first modern downhill skiers took to the slopes more than a century ago. There are resorts of all size, with many linking together to form some of Europe’s biggest ski areas, and almost all just a short transfer from the airport.
