Summer Ski Holidays

Skier in Zermatt

If the UK weather is rubbish in the Summer, you'd be forgiven for looking for a different kind of adventure - a summer ski holiday !

Summer skiing is a very different experience to Winter. To start with the slopes open early, often before 7:00am, and then close mid afternoon. As you are mainly skiing on glaciers at high altitudes of up to 3900m, it is cold first thing and the snow will be hard corduroy for those first few turns. The slopes are normally at their best between 8am -12pm, and then (inevitably) under strong sunshine they become softer and even a little slushy. The perfect time time to stop for lunch!

Also bear in mind the ski areas in Summer are much smaller, but there are plenty of varied runs to choose from - its definitely not all not all flat blue pistes. Dress in layers you can take off as it gets warmer, and don't forget sun cream and sun glasses as they are essential - it gets very hot in the rarefied air at altitude.

For a summer ski holiday, it is not just about the slopes. In the afternoon there a huge choice of activities available and the resorts are well set up for you to have a none stop holiday. You can just sit back and relax in the sun, or most glacial resorts offer lovely alpine walking or mountain biking activities, with the mountain restaurants open for that all important drink stop. Other summer activities include range from rock climbing lesson to golf, and swimming to tennis, which means you will never get bored.

At SkiWeekends we can tailor make your summer skiing holiday for you like, whether that is a 3, 4 or 5-night break, or a week long trip.

Once we are able to travel to Europe, these are our favourite options for a summer, glacial ski holiday:

CERVINIA, ITALY

We work closely with The Warren Smith Academy and their summer camps in Cervinia are a brilliant way to make the most of the slopes and to really focus on improving your technique, ready for next winter. We promote Warrens courses in the Verbier during the winter and cannot rate Warrens courses highly enough. Read our story here.

The package included the accommodation, meals and coaching.

TIGNES, FRANCE

France's highest summer ski area offers mixed terrain on sunny slopes. Tignes resort even has a lake for a few water sports in the afternoon.

HINTERTUX, AUSTRIA

Austria's popular summer ski area offers some great pistes to test your ski legs. Located up the valley from Mayrhofen.

ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND

Spectacular scenery surrounds you as you are skiing next to the Matterhorn. Zermatt is car free and the town has a lovely traditional Swiss feel. You can go exploring on the funicular trains too.

OTHER OPTIONS

The southern hemisphere goes into winter over our summer and New Zealand and Australia have several ski resorts, so it's worth looking into those if you want to go long haul!
