Snowy chalets in Flaine

FLAINE - THE RESORT

Purpose built in the 1960’s (evidenced by the resort’s somewhat distinctive architecture) and gateway to Le Grand Massif ski area; Flaine is a compact, convenient and easily accessible ski resort that is widely considered the ideal option for families and groups. That said, however, Flaine’s suitability stretches further than just family groups; with an atmospheric village that offers everything from shops, bars and plenty of local amenities, plus phenomenal access to one of the largest French ski areas, there is certainly enough here to amuse everybody. Whilst having a broad appeal, one of our favourite features is the spacious centre, which is teeming with lively pavement cafes and bars - an idyllic place to be before and after a full day’s skiing.

Set among the trees, the resort itself is at the foot of a big snowy bowl, and is made up of two distinct parts; Forum is centred around a square whilst Foret is further up the hillside and larger -the two are linked by two lifts. Hameau de Flaine is about 1km away from the main centre and is connected by road by night and linking pistes whilst on the slopes. The village has limited amenities but aesthetically speaking, its traditional chalet architecture stands in stark contrast to the imposing tower blocks of the main resort.

Convenience is definitely one of Flaine’s key features and the resort is widely considered as one of the best functional ski in/out resorts in the Alps. Despite the resort being relatively traffic free, visitors can benefit from the highly efficient, free bus service that runs late into the evening. Furthermore, Flaine is in a fantastic geographical location; not only is the resort a stone’s throw away from Geneva and Mont Blanc, making it an ideal option for a weekend escape to the French Alps, but if you have a car it’s perfectly feasible to visit Megeve, Chamonix or the Portes du Soleil, although, given the amount that the Grand Massif has to offer, we doubt that you will need to!
