Arosa from aboveArosa Resort Guide

Originally a quiet Alpine farming settlement, Arosa’s rise began in the late 1800s when it became a sanatorium town renowned for its crisp, dry mountain air. Wealthy visitors from Zurich and beyond arrived seeking the health benefits of altitude — much like Davos — and grand hotels soon followed. The first ski races were held here in 1904, making Arosa one of Switzerland’s earliest winter sports resorts.

By the 1920s and ’30s, Arosa had gained an international reputation for elegant mountain holidays, attracting visitors from across Europe. The resort’s traditional wooden chalets, horse-drawn sleighs, and stunning panoramic setting have been carefully preserved — giving it a uniquely nostalgic charm, even as modern lifts and luxury hotels now line its slopes.

Today, Arosa blends heritage and modernity: an authentic Swiss mountain town that remains peaceful and characterful, while offering world-class skiing and a seamless link to Lenzerheide’s expansive slopes.

Off the Slopes

Arosa is not just about skiing — it’s about atmosphere. The compact village centre is pedestrian-friendly, with cafés, boutique shops, and horse-drawn sleigh rides still common in winter evenings. There’s a friendly après scene with bars like the KuhBar, but the vibe remains relaxed and sophisticated.

Other highlights:

  • 30+ mountain restaurants and huts with sun terraces
  • Winter hiking & cross-country trails
  • Toboggan runs and ice skating
  • Wellness spas and lakeside walks
